Both the Men's and Women's Alberta Teams kept to seeding at the 2018 Canadian Men's & Women's Team Championships, which concluded this past Sunday in Windsor, ON.
The Women's Team, led by National Team Athlete and 2017 National Championship Finalist Danielle Letourneau, went undefeated in pool play before coming up against a powerhouse Ontario 1 team in the final and falling 3-0. The stacked Ontario team, whose 1-2 athletes were top PSA-ranked Canadian Samantha Cornett and reigning National Champion Hollie Noughton, were dominant throughout the weekend, dropping only one game in the final match to the Albertans en route to their victory.
The Men's final was a hotly contested affair, with reigning champions and number one seeded Quebec looking for their 9th Team Championship title. The contest came down to the last match, after Alberta #2 Graeme Schnell was able to overcome David Baillargeon in 4 games while his brother and top Alberta-ranked athlete Andrew fell to top Quebec player and former National Champion Shawn DeLierre in 4 games. The result then came down to the #3 players, which saw Canadian ranked #19 Jake Hooker looking to upset #8 Jason DeLierre. After splitting the first two games by the narrowest of margins, DeLierre's experience took over and he was able to cruise to victory taking the next two games and the match in 4 games.
