2020 Pan American Junior Championships/2020 World University Squash Championships- Albertans named to the teams

Mar. 30, 2020

Yesterday the Federacion Panamericana de Squash announced that regrettably but understandably they have POSTPONED the 2020 Pan American Junior Championships originally scheduled for July 5-11 in El Salvador and “will continue efforts to reschedule the championship later this year if at all possible”.

At the same time, Squash Canada wishes to recognize the players who have been selected to the Canadian Team.  The Junior/Athlete Pathway Committee selected from amongst those who had submitted a declaration of interest the following players:

Junior Women

Sarah Cao, BC

Amal Izhar, ON

Ananya Maheshwari, ON

Leah McGillicuddy, ON

Junior Men

Amin Kahn, ON

Mo Kamal, AB

Antonio Mendes, AB

Gabriel Yun, BC

Squash Canada’s position is that we will continue to plan for the Canadian Team’s participation in the re-scheduled event so long as we deem it safe for team members to do so, and/or until the event may be outright cancelled.  We will continue with planning without committing non-refundable expenses, for things like flights and accommodation.

FISU, the world university sport federation, has CANCELED the 2020 World University Squash Championships scheduled for July 17-23 in Shanghai, China.  Three dedicated student-athletes were on the verge of representing Canada at this event:

Amelia Knaap, AB

Catherine Giachino, ON

Dominic Wren, QC

Postponed or missed opportunities outright, Squash Canada wishes to congratulate all these athletes on their talent and desire to take their game to new international heights.

Best to all,

Dan Wolfenden
